Recently, a friend of mine asked if it was really worth it to celebrate their daughter’s first birthday, because she is not going to remember it. She let me know that it seemed like a party was more for the adults and not for the child. Then she asked me what did I do for my kids.
I explained that for my first son, on his first birthday I had a barbecue in the park with all our friends and family. My first son’s birthday is in June so his birthday parties are usually an outdoor event.
My second son came five years later and for his birthday, which happens in April, and is usually around Easter. It is usually an indoor event. For my second son, his first birthday we had just immediate family and friends over to celebrate his birthday with a cake.
Honestly, whether you do birthdays with a hundred people and a cake or just both of you with a cupcake a candle, it doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that you have a snapshot of the moment that you can later on share with your child of how you marked the day.
I found that both my boys have wanted to know how they spent their first couple birthdays. At which time I was able to pull out the album and share the memories with them.
So the reality is you that don’t do it for them now, you do it for the memories that you want to be able to share with them.
